Ich musste zwar sehr lange auf das Visa warten, als ich es bekommen habe ging es dann jedoch sehr schnell Richtung USA. 

In wenigen Tagen waren viele Kleinigkeiten zu erledigen…

• internationaler Führerschein (wird beim ÖAMTC ausgestellt und ist nötig, um ein Auto zu mieten)
• Ankunftsdokumente drucken (müssen nach Ankunft vor Ort unterschrieben und alsbald an die Sponsoring Agency zurückgesendet werden)
• Sim-Karte aktivieren (im Zuge eines J-1 Visas bekommt man eine Sim-Karte zugeschickt, die man online aktivieren kann und für welche man verschiedene Tarife auswählen kann)
• Stromadapter besorgen (amerikanische Steckdosen haben ein anderes Format)
• Dollar wechseln lassen (damit man bei Ankunft ein bisschen Bargeld dabei hat)
• PCR-Test und internationaler Impfpass (zurzeit muss man vollständig gegen Covid-19 geimpft sein und ein PCR-Testergebnis, das nicht älter ist als 48h ist, vorweisen um eine Reise in die USA antreten zu können)
• Packliste schreiben 
• Verabschieden von Familie und Freunden

Am 25.11. – Thanksgiving Day – ging die Reise los:

Wien – Amsterdam – Detroit – Nashville

Alles verlief nach Plan und die etwa 16 Reisestunden waren sehr entspannt und meine Vorfreude war ungetrübt.

Der erste, kurze Flug ging von Wien nach Amsterdam, von dort führte der transatlantische Flug nach Detroit. 

Um sich auf das Land einzustimmen zu können bieten Fluglinien meist eine Auswahl an Filmklassikern an. Ich habe mich für schwere, historische Kost entschieden und meinen Flug nach Detroit mit “Band of Brothers”, eine Geschichte nach wahren Begebenheiten über die “Airborne”-Soldaten aus dem zweiten Weltkrieg, verbracht.

Durch die FFP2-Maske fingen meine Ohren nach einiger Zeit an zu schmerzen. Aber auch das tat meiner Stimmung keinen Abriss. Außerdem sitzen alle im selben Boot (oder Flugzeug) – da muss man durch. 

Die Border Control nach der Landung in Detroit war sehr schnell erledigt und das Personal war wirklich freundlich. Bei der Kontrolle muss der Pass mit dem Visum vorgelegt werden und zusätzlich das originale DS-2019 Formular, das man von der Sponsoring Agency erhalten hat. 

Da Thanksgiving in Amerika ein sehr groß gefeiertes Fest ist hatte ich Sorge, dass auf den Flughäfen – besonders die Inlandsflügen betreffend – sehr viel los sein würde. Dem war zum Glück nicht so – auch von Detroit nach Nashville verlief die Reise problemlos.

Bei Ankunft in “Music City” erwartete mich strömender Regen. Aber zum Glück war das nächste Uber nicht weit und in weniger als 20 Minuten Fahrt durch eine ausgestorbene Stadt (danke, Thanksgiving) war ich bereits in meinem Airbnb. Besser hätte die Reise nicht laufen können.

Even though I had to wait a very long time for the visa, when I finally got it, my departure came pretty quickly. Within a few days I had to organise a lot of little things...

• get an international driver’s license (issued by the ÖAMTC – required if you want to rent a car in the States)
• print arrival documents (must be signed after arrival on site and sent back to the sponsoring agency as soon as possible)
• activate SIM card (as part of a J-1 visa, you will receive a SIM card that you can activate online and for which you can choose different service plans)
• buy power adapters (american sockets have a different format)
• exchange money (so you have some cash with you on arrival)
• get an international vaccination certificate (currently you have to be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 and have a PCR-test result that is not older than 48 hours to be able to travel to the USA. Wearing a facemask is also mandatory on all flights).
• get PCR tested 
• pack 
• say goodbye to family and friends

On November 25th (Thanksgiving Day) the journey started:

Vienna – Amsterdam – Detroit – Nashville

Everything went according to plan and the 16 or so hours of travel were very relaxed.

The first, short flight was from Vienna to Amsterdam, there I hopped on the transatlantic flight to Detroit.
American airlines usually offer a selection of classic films. I chose a heavy, but super interesting historical movie to spend my flight to Detroit with. “Band of Brothers”  – a true story about the Airborne soldiers of WWII.

After a while, the FFP2 mask straps made my ears ache. But I guess everyone is in the same boat (or on the same plane)..

Border control in Detroit went very smoothly and the staff was really friendly. The passport with the visa and the original DS-2019 form you have received from the sponsoring agency must be presented during the inspection.

Since Thanksgiving is a very big day in America, I was worried that the airports would be very busy with people flying home to their families, especially concerning domestic flights. Fortunately, that was not the case, the trip from Detroit to Nashville went smoothly as well.

“Music City” welcomed me with pouring rain. Fortunately, the next Uber wasn’t far and in less than a 20 minutes’ drive through a deserted city (thanks to Thanksgiving) I arrived at my Airbnb.
