Die SAE in Nordamerika besteht aus insgesamt 5 Standorten: Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, Nashville, New York und Vancouver, Kanada. Ein weiterer Campus in Emeryville, wird leider in den nächsten Monaten geschlossen. Mit ihm leider auch die gesamte „Game“-Sparte in den USA.
Die restlichen Institute bieten weiterhin Ausbildungen im Bereich Audio Engineering und Entertainment Business (außer in New York und Miami) an. Am Campus in Atlanta kann man außerdem Digital Film studieren. Wie auch in Europa bietet jeder Campus den Diploma-Schritt an, einen Bachelor kann man jedoch nicht überall machen.
New York und Miami orientieren sich außerdem nach einem anderen Schulsystem, dem „Clock Hour“ System.
Für einen Abschluss wird die Gesamtzahl der tatsächlichen Stunden pro Woche, die ein Student für den Besuch von Kursen oder anderen Unterrichtsaktivitäten verbringt, angerechnet. Diese können nur bestätigt werden, wenn sich StudentInnen aktiv in einem Klassenzimmer befinden, weshalb Unterrichte, Übungen und Projektarbeiten eine Präsenz am Campus erfordern. Das System an diesen Standorten erinnert eher an mitteleuropäische Pflichtschulen oder Fachschulen. Das System dieser SAE Standorte mit einem unsrigen zu vereinen ist etwas schwierig, weshalb es einfach gesagt besser ist, einen kompletten Kurs, zum Beispiel das ganze Diploma, dort zu absolvieren. Bislang kann man an diesen zwei Standorten nur das Audio Technology Diploma auf Clock-Hours Basis absolvieren.
AUDIO TECHNOLOGY DIPLOMA

Das Audio Diplom vermittelt den Studierenden das Wissen und die Fähigkeiten rund um Audioproduktion. In diesem praxisorientierten, projektbasierten Programm lernt man sowohl die technischen als auch die kreativen Komponenten des Audiodesigns, sowie die Geschäftsprinzipien der Unterhaltungsindustrie kennen.
In Atlanta, Chicago und Nashville wird das „Credit Hour“ System angewandt. Der Begriff „Kreditstunden“ bezieht sich auf die Anzahl der Punkte, die ein Student für die Einschreibung (und den erfolgreichen Abschluss) eines bestimmten Kurses erhält. In der Regel müssen Studierende eine bestimmte Anzahl von Credits erbringen, um ein Studium erfolgreich abzuschließen. Kreditstunden spiegeln nicht direkt die Gesamtzahl der Stunden pro Woche wider, die ein Student im Unterricht verbringt, sondern die Arbeitsbelastung jedes Kurses, wie es auch an SAEs im deutschsprachigem Raum der Fall ist. Vergleichbar sind auch ECTS an öffentlichen Universitäten und Hochschulen. In Atlanta, Chicago und Nashville werden verschiedene Kurse auf dieser Basis angeboten:

DIGITAL FILM ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE

Das Digital Film Associate of Applied Science Degree vermittelt grundlegende Kenntnisse in den Bereichen Filmausrüstung, Software und Workflows. Die Studierenden lernen in einer kollaborativen Umgebung mit branchenüblicher Ausrüstung unter der fachkundigen Anleitung erfahrener DozentInnen.
Will man an einem Campus in den USA ein Austauschsemester verbringen oder einen ganzen Teil seiner Ausbildung absolvieren, muss man entweder ein M-1 (Diploma Level), oder F-1 Visa (Associate/Bachelor Level) beantragen. (Ich selbst habe ein J-1 Visa, da es sich nicht um einen schulischen Austausch, sondern um ein Praktikum handelt). Einfacher ist es natürlich immer, einen ganzen Ausbildungsschritt an einem einzigen Campus zu absolvieren, also zum Beispiel das Diploma in Europa und danach einen Bachelor in Amerika oder umgekehrt.
Das Associate Level in dieser Form gibt es bei uns in Europa nicht. Es ist eine Art Zwischenschritt vor der Bachelorausbildung, in dem der Fokus auf Allgemeinbildung liegt. Nach einer abgeschlossenen Matura (= abgeschlossenes Abitur) kann man sich einiges davon, oder je nach Schultyp eventuell sogar alles anrechnen lassen. Dafür kann man offizielle Agenturen beauftragen, die Ausbildung in Credit (oder Clock) Hours umrechnen und dies offiziell beglaubigen. Für jeden Studenten/ jede Studentin ist die Situation anders, weshalb man sich in jedem Fall mit den BildungsberaterInnen am Ursprungs- bzw. am Zielcampus in Verbindung setzen sollte um die genauen Anforderungen herauszufinden.

The SAE in North America consists of a total of 6 locations: Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, Nashville, New York and Vancouver, Canada. The campuses offer training in audio and entertainment business (except in New York and Miami). You can also study digital film at the Atlanta campus. Just like the ones in Europe, every campus offers a diploma course, but you cannot obtain a bachelor’s degree at every location.
New York and Miami campuses offer education based on a “Clock Hour” system. That means that the credential is based on the total number of actual hours per week a student spends attending courses or other classroom activities. These can only be confirmed if students are actively in a classroom, which is why lessons, exercises and project work require physical presence on campus. The system at these locations is reminiscent of the Central European compulsory schools or technical schools. Combining the system of these SAE locations with the higher education system in German speaking countries is a bit difficult, which is why it is better to complete the entity of a course, for example the entire diploma, there. At the moment, the only course offered in New York and Miami is the Audio Technology Diploma on a clock-hour basis

The diploma in Audio provides students with the knowledge and skills to shape audio design and creation. In this hands-on, project-based program, you’ll learn both the technical and creative components of audio design along with the business principles of the entertainment industry.
A different system called “credit hour system” is used in Atlanta, Chicago and Nashville. The term “credit hours” refers to the number of points a student receives for enrolling (and successfully completing) a particular course. Students have to achieve a certain number of credits in order to successfully complete a degree. Credit hours do not directly reflect the total number of hours per week a student spends in class, but instead reflect the workload of each course, as is also the case with SAEs in German-speaking countries. ECTS at public universities and colleges in the Middle European area are also comparable. Based on this system Atlanta, Chicago and Nashville offer a number of courses:

The Digital Film Associate of Applied Science Degree provides basic proficiencies with filmmaking equipment, software and workflows. Students study in a collaborative environment with industry-standard equipment and studios, under the expert guidance of experienced instructors.
If you want to spend an exchange semester on a campus in the United States or complete a part of your training, you need either an M-1 (Diploma Level), or F- 1 Visa (Associate/Bachelor Level). (I myself have a J-1 visa, as it is not a school exchange, but an internship I am doing). It is of course always easier to complete an entire training step on one single campus, for example the diploma in Europe and then a Bachelor in America or vice versa..
The Associate Level in this form does not exist in Europe. It is a kind of intermediate step before the bachelor’s degree, in which the focus lies on general education. After completing 12 to 13 years of education with a “Matura” or “Abitur” you should, however (depending on the type of school you attended) already have the credits for the Associate Level. You can have official agencies convert your training and schooling history into credit (or clock) hours and officially certify your level of education. The situation is different for every student, which is why you should always contact the educational advisor at the origin or destination campus to find out the exact requirements and determine which course will fit for you.
