Ein Wochenende in Nashville! (D)
In der (gezwungenermaßen) sehr langen Vorbereitungsphase auf die Reise nach Nashville bin ich über so einige Blogs und Videos gestoßen, die Empfehlungen für alle möglichen Attraktionen und kulinarische Tipps für die Stadt aussprechen. Daher habe ich schon vor etwa zwei Jahren begonnen eine Liste mit allen Dingen, die ich in Nashville erleben möchte zu schreiben. Man könnte denken, dass die Liste seit meiner Ankunft kürzer geworden ist, doch jedes Mal wenn ich etwas unternehme und neue Menschen treffe werden mir neue Empfehlungen ausgesprochen, die es auf die Liste schaffen…
Nach einer (für eine Europäerin unerwarteten und ungewohnten) Tornado-Warnung in der Nacht von Donnerstag auf Freitag und dem Vorbeiziehen eines ziemlich heftigen Sturms ist das Wetter doch noch umgeschwungen. Perfekte Konditionen um weitere Punkte auf meiner Liste in Angriff zu nehmen,
Neben lauten Sirenen in der ganzen Stadt werden automatische Warnungen an alle Handys gesendet.
#1 Third Man Records
Third Man Records wurde ursprünglich 2001 von Musiker Jack White (“The White Stripes”) in Detroit, MI, gegründet. Im März 2009 wurde ein Standort in Nashville, TN, eröffnet. Third Man Records enthält in seinem aktuellen Zustand einen Plattenladen, Plattenfirmen, Fotostudio, Dunkelkammer und Live-Location mit analoger Aufnahmekabine. Fast alle der von Jack White produzierten Platten werden in Nashville, TN aufgenommen, gedruckt und gepresst. Auf diese Weise strebt TMR danach, eine spontane und greifbare Ästhetik zurück ins Plattengeschäft zu bringen. Im Store werden Schallplatten, Kurioses und Merchandise angeboten sowie die Möglichkeit, den Third Man Record Booth zu nutzen, wo die eigene Stimme auf einer 6″-Platte aufgenommen werden kann, und andere Neuheiten, wie das einzige öffentliche, funktionierende Scopitone, ein Dip-n-Dunk Photo Booth und eine Mold-a-rama-Maschine. Man kann locker zwei Stunden dort verbringen und mit den verschiedenen Geräten spielen oder durch das Platten- und Buchsortiment schmökern.
#2 Johnny Cash Museum
Einer der Urväter der Country Musik war Johnny Cash. Mit seinen zahlreichen Platten hat er mehr als nur einen Rekord gebrochen und sich seinen Platz in der Country Music Hall of Fame verdient. Ein kleines Museum am Broadway erinnert an sein Vermächtnis und gibt Einblicke in sein bewegtes Leben.
#3 Nissan Stadium
Direkt am Cumberland River thront das Zuhause der Tennessee Titans – dem NFL-Team der Stadt Nashville – in dem sie ihre Heimspiele bestreiten. Jeden Sonntag während der NFL Saison ist Gameday und es dreht sich in Amerika alles um American Football. Eines dieser Spiele live zu sehen stand auf meiner Bucketlist ganz oben, weshalb ich mir bereits vor Monaten (noch bevor ich überhaupt ein Flugticket hatte) Karten für das Spiel besorgt habe. Meine Vorfreude auf das Match gegen die Jacksonville Jaguars war dementsprechend groß! In Begleitung meiner Freundin Alli saß ich bei strahlendem Sonnenschein und wunderbarem Ausblick in den Rängen und habe die Titans bei einem 20:0 Sieg über die Jaguars bejubelt – die Stimmung im Stadium war sonach ekstatisch.
#4 Food and Drinks
Sehr viele meiner To-Do’s haben einen kulinarischen Hintergrund. Dazu zählen das bereits erwähnt “Hattie B’s” und die hoch gelobten “Fried Pickles”. An diesem Wochenende habe ich im Brewhouse am Broadway zum ersten Mal “Bushwackers” (alkoholische Milkshakes) probiert, sie zählen auch zu den Spezialitäten dieser Gegend. Mein Fazit fällt sehr positiv aus, aber wie bei den meisten Getränken und Speisen hierzulande sollte man am Besten nicht auf den Zuckeranteil schauen.
#6 City Walk
Ein kleiner Abendspaziergang nach Nachos und Milkshakes tat auf jeden Fall gut und bot nochmal einen schönen Ausblick auf das Nissan Stadium, sowie die Gelegenheit einen berühmten Fotospot, die “Angel Wings” von Künstlerin Kelsea Montague zu besuchen.
Für mich als Wahl-Wienerin sind die von Esel gezogenen Kutschen in Downtown immer wieder ein Schmunzeln wert, da sie an eine rustikale Version der traditionellen Wiener “Fiaker”(Pferdekutschen) erinnern.
Die Bucket List ist natürlich noch lange nicht komplett abgehakt – es gibt auf jeden Fall in den nächsten Wochen noch einiges zu besichtigen… und zu verkosten! 😉
A weekend in Nashville! (E)
During the (necessarily) very long preparation phase for the trip to Nashville, I came across a few blogs and videos recommending all sorts of attractions and culinary tips for the city. Therefor I started to write a list of all the things I would like to experience in Nashville about two years ago. You’d think the list has gotten shorter since my arrival, but every time I cross something off my list I meet people and get new recommendations that make it onto the list.
In addition to loud sirens all across the city to alert people of incoming threats, automatic alerts are sent to all cell phones.
#1 Third Man Records
Third Man Records was originally founded by Jack White in Detroit, MI in 2001. In March of 2009 a location was established in Nashville, TN. In its current state, Third Man Records contains a record store, record label offices, a photo studio, dark room and live venue with analog recording booth. Almost all of the records are recorded, printed and pressed in Nashville, TN and produced by Jack White. In this fashion TMR strives to bring a spontaneous and tangible aesthetic back into the record business. The storefront offers vinyl records, curiosities & merchandise, the opportunity to use the Third Man Record Booth, where you can “record your own voice” on a 6″ record, and other novelties, such as the only public, working Scopitone, a Dip-n-Dunk Photo Booth, and a Mold-a-rama machine. You can easily spend two hours in the store trying out all the curiosities and browsing through the collection of vinyls and books.
#2 Johnny Cash Museum
One of the fathers of country music was Johnny Cash. With an enormous amount of music released, he has broken more than one record and earned his place in the Country Music Hall of Fame. The small museum on Broadway commemorates his legacy and gives insights into his eventful and rather dramatic life.
#3 Nissan Stadium
Located right next to Cumberland River Nissan Stadium, home of the Tennessee Titans – Nashvilles own NFL team – is located. During NFL season every Sunday is a gameday and all of America gets crazy about Football. Watching one of these games live has been at the top of my bucket list for a very long time, which is why I bought tickets for the game months ago, even before I had my plane ticket. I was definitely looking forward to the game against the Jacksonville Jaguars! Accompanied by my friend Alli I cheered for the Titans at their a 20-0 win over the Jaguars in great weather with an ever greater view – a most atmospheric ambience!
#5 Food and Drinks
Many of my to-dos have a culinary background. Including the already mentioned “Hattie B’s” and the highly acclaimed “Fried Pickles”. This weekend I tried “bushwackers” (alcoholic milkshakes) for the first time at the Brewhouse on Broadway – they are one of the specialties in the area. My conclusion is very positive, but as with most drinks here, it is best not to look at the sugar content.
#6 City Walk
A short evening stroll afterwards was definitely a good idea and offered another nice view of the Nissan Stadium as well as the opportunity to visit a famous photo spot, the “Angel Wings” by artist Kelsea Montague. As a Viennese by choice, the donkey-drawn carriages in downtown are always worth a smile to me, because they remind me of a rustic version of the traditional Viennese “Fiaker” (horse-drawn carriages).
My bucket list is of course far from completed – there is definitely still a lot to see (and taste) over the next few weeks!
